This 1937 J-35 arrived in unplayable condition, and after a complete overhaul here in the Mass Street repair shop it has revealed itself as one of the most open, dynamic and woody Gibson's we've had the pleasure of presenting.
Featuring the iconic late '30s Gibson burst and firestripe pickguard, this 3-tone bar build has a balanced tone between treble and bass, enough volume to compete with any square shoulder dreadnought, with a mid-range growl to it that makes it a joy to play.
Given its arrival in unplayable condition, our shop proceeded to replace the previously cupped, failed bridge plate, correct the bellying of the top and install a new proper size and shape replacement. With the geometry corrected, the original bridge could be reglued and a neck reset and refret (along with a PLEK fret dress) could be completed. A new nut and saddle were installed, and a pair of top cracks were addressed and repaired. A pair of small side cracks were also repaired. The final step was to repair a crack in the tailblock, and install a reinforcement strip to help support it.
The finish is original, with no overspray. There is evidence of there being replacement tuners installed at one point, however the originals have been reinstalled with replacement tuner buttons. There is, of course, playwear throughout that really gives this vintage guitar a marvelous played-in charm. A wonderful vintage Gibson that's been given a thorough and professional restoration, this is a great sounding and now playing, J-35.
